Tokyo Diaries XI

A mental travel preparation.

1. Eikō Hosoe Barakei, 1961-1962
2. Tamotsu Yatō Mishima Yukio, 1967

Theoretically following the man who died for his genius, insanity and sexual identity. While examining various possible aspects, it is radicalness that attracts this cultural tourism.

Tokyo Diaries VI

A mental travel preparation.

Mikio Sakabe Fall/Winter 2013

"When the world turns pink and boys wear lipstick, frilled diapers and duvet night gowns, we are covered in the cold sweat of erotic nightmares." - he nods and decides to not pack any underwear. The closing of his suitcase is followed by a pondering silence.

The sleeping prince has been kissed by a rose. As graphic scribble, outline print or cut-and-paste laminate appliqué. The next bouquet of flowers best comes in the form of a pinstripe suit.

15. Tadanori Yokoo Genka (Illusory Flowers), 1975

At first glance, Yohji Yamamoto's latest collection felt like a departure.Towards tattoo and tribal, psychodelia and visual shock. Recurrent motifs: skulls, roses, serpents. In fact, it was not a change of methodology, nor psychology. Instead of covering everything in black dye/ink, the inner essence and tradition of Japanese visual culture was made visible. Yamamoto revealed himself (as friend of Tadanori Yokoo); of course only to those who remember.

18. Jil Sander 1966

Georg Baselitz and Jil Sander/Raf Simons share a rawness, immediacy and severity. Mostly depicting/proposing men in suits and women in primary colour dresses. They are minimalist, restrained and, yet, messed up. The purity of imperfection.

Post Paris XXVII

A 'False Encyclopaedia' double feature with Christopher Shannon, discussing:
Comme des Garçons Fall/Winter 2013

Louise Wilson would say on the MA "It doesn't matter what you do, what's important is that you do it well", this really applies to Comme des Garçons. Without the great fabric, fit and finishing it could fall into scary BA collection territory. I'm always astounded by how well the pieces are made and the exploration and repetition of a few ideas. It's such a palette cleanser from the depressing abundance of hard lines, tight dresses and overly high shoes, so nice to see work that designers have touched. Still have no idea if anyone buys it though, apart from a few ageing gallery owners and art teachers.

Extreme tailoring, shredded and über-constructed. Of origami roses, bows and knots. Like the neurotic, twisted fantasy of a lesbian investment broker. With a surrealist power suit parade, Rei Kawakubo is introducing Japanese Psycho. And once again, it all is like nothing before.
